Oncology Nursing Month 2026

Oncology Nursing Month 2026: Recognizing the Work That Holds Cancer Care Together

Each May, we celebrate Oncology Nursing Month 2026 to honor the nurses who hold cancer care together from the inside out. The Oncology Nursing Society established this observance in the 1980s, and each year’s theme reflects where the profession stands and where it continues to grow.

Every day, you provide more than clinical care. You monitor for adverse reactions, walk patients through what their diagnosis means for their lives, and hold space for fear, grief, and hard news. You do it across infusion centers, inpatient units, surgical suites, and radiation treatment rooms, often without enough acknowledgment.

This year’s theme, “Oncology Nurses: Growing Hope, Inspiring Strength,” is a fitting reflection of what we see in this specialty: nurses who grow alongside their patients and bring strength to work that never lets up.

At Cancer CarePoint, we see you, and we are grateful. This month, we simply want to say thank you.

A Specialty That Asks Everything of You

Oncology nursing asks more than most. Your patients are not recovering from a single event; they are managing a disease that reshapes their entire life. You are with them through diagnosis, treatment, complications, and what comes after, often across months or years. The relationships run deep, and so does the weight of that presence.

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing has documented a persistent nursing shortage with particular severity in oncology, where clinical training demands and emotional toll narrow the pipeline. The nurses who stay carry that reality without it always being visible to those around them.

Celebrating Oncology Nurses This Month

Oncology Nursing Month 2026 is a meaningful opportunity for facilities to close the gap between what nurses contribute and how consistently that contribution is acknowledged.

  • Write personal notes that name actual contributions, not general effort.
  • Acknowledge specific situations where a nurse caught something, advocated for a patient, or steadied a difficult moment.
  • Host a team gathering that creates space for nurses to reflect on the year together rather than just receive praise from leadership. That recognition should extend to every nurse on the team, including locum tenens oncology nurses who have covered gaps, maintained continuity of care, and integrated into units without the benefit of a long onboarding runway.
  • Nominate standout nurses for ONS awards, which are open throughout May and carry genuine professional recognition within the specialty.
  • Share recognition publicly on social media using the official hashtag, #OncologyNursingMonth, so the acknowledgment reaches beyond the department walls.

This Month, and Every Month, We Thank You

At Cancer CarePoint, we’ve worked alongside oncology nurses across every setting and specialty since 1994, and the commitment we see in this profession never changes. We are here to support you whether you’re looking for career flexibility, a new opportunity, or simply a team that understands your world.

Today, we celebrate the care you provide, honor the strength it takes to give it, and remain committed to standing beside you, just as you stand beside your patients.

Happy Oncology Nursing Month 2026.
