Hospitals are the frontline of cancer care, yet today’s workforce is under increasing pressure. Since 1975, the number of community hospitals in the US has declined by 15% due to consolidation and financial incentives, leading to higher patient volumes and heavier workloads.
The lack of adequate facilities has squeezed more patients into fewer hospitals, resulting in rising mental health concerns for physicians and APPs. These strains are felt strongly in oncology, where long-term treatment relationships and emotionally intense care are the norm.
As a result, burnout among oncologists is surging. A 2024 Medscape report found that 59% of oncologists experienced at least one symptom of burnout, up dramatically from 34% in 2013. This emotional toll, coupled with increasing demand from an aging population, rising cancer survivorship, and slow growth in physician training programs, has created a widening gap in the oncology workforce. By 2025, the US is projected to face a shortage of more than 2,200 medical oncologists.
